Nordex and Vestas have announced turbine orders for large wind farms in the Canadian province of Alberta, where a recent pause on clean energy approvals has drawn the ire of renewables and business groups.

German manufacturer Nordex is due to supply its largest shareholder Acciona Energía with 49 of its N155/5.X turbines for the 280MW Forty Mile wind farm.

The turbines will have power ratings of 5.7MW, use 108-metre steel towers, and be equipped for temperatures that can fall below minus 30 degrees.

The cold-climate version of the turbines includes additional heaters on the switch and battery boxes, “special low-temperature materials” in the rotor shafts, and using a generator coolant that will not freeze in lower temperatures.

Acciona’s Forty Mile wind farm is due online in the first quarter of 2025.

Meanwhile, Danish OEM Vestas recently announced a deal to supply Capital Power with 31 of its V150-4.5MW turbines for the 140MW Halkirk II wind farm.

It will also service the wind farm for ten years.

Turbine delivery is due to start in the second quarter of 2024 ahead of project commissioning in the fourth quarter.

The turbine orders follow the Alberta government announcing a pause in reviewing new renewable energy projects in the province – a move that has been criticised by clean energy and business groups.
